Big Muddy’s, located right on the Mississippi waterfront in Burlington, Iowa, is a locally-owned and operated family restaurant that has been in business for over thirty years. In fact, we have survived two major floods! Our customers return to us over and again because of our friendly atmosphere, varied and delicious menu, daily drink and food specials, weekend lunch and brunch, and live entertainment on occasion.
Big Muddy’s was built as a freight house in 1898 by the Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railroads. The building we are located in has been more commonly known as “the Old Rock Island freight house,” and has been selected for the National Register of Historic Places. The building symbolizes Burlington’s railroad and transportation heritage and is the only significant building of Victorian character that is located right on the riverfront.
In the past, riverboats and other railroads used the freight house as a transfer point to send cargo as far north as Minneapolis, and as far south as St. Louis, as well as to many other parts of the US. Despite surviving two major floods – the first in 1993 and the second in 2008 – we are still standing and continue to be a major staple in the local community.
